Copier Service Techs Seeking Better Pay, Less Stress

This month, Copier Careers released our 2011 Service Technician Salary Survey. A record number of techs (4,063!) participated in this year’s survey, making it our biggest and best ever. It’s been a difficult year for copier technicians, and our survey results suggest that many of them may be considering changing jobs within the next several months. A few key findings:

  • Average salaries are up this year for the first time since the recession began, and so are bonuses. Unfortunately, cuts in benefits may have offset these gains.

  • Techs continue to work extremely long hours and report high levels of stress. After many successive months of working in “crisis mode,” job satisfaction has suffered. For many, loyalty and dedication are failing to pay off.

  • As the job market becomes more fluid, many techs are considering a change in employment. “Doing more with less is finally starting to catch up with employers,” says Copier Careers president Paul Schwartz. “Companies that can’t deliver some relief to their people are going to see some attrition.”

THE TOP 7... Signs It’s Time to Leave Your Job

Tips from the trenches to keep your copier career on track

Copier dealerships are hiring again, and many copier-industry employees are thinking about making a change. But how do you know when the time is right to launch your next job search? If any of these situations apply to you, you may want to dust off your resume:

  1. You’re getting paid less than you’re worth. For the past several years, many of us in the industry have been happy simply to hang on to our jobs. But the recovery is on, and talented salespeople, technicians, managers, and back office staff are in demand. To find out what other people in the industry are making, check out the Copier Careers Salary Surveys, available online at http://copiercareers.com/salary_surveys.shtml.

  2. You’ve got the Sunday blues. Thinking that Monday always comes too soon is one thing. But when you can no longer enjoy Sunday because you’re too bummed about going back to work the next morning, you’ve got a problem.

  3. You have nightmares about your job. Work nightmares are the worst — they’re like spending time at work without getting paid for it. Dreaming about your job is a dead giveaway that you’re stressed or overworked.

  4. Your company isn’t helping you grow. An increasing number of copier dealerships are encouraging employee growth through education and tuition reimbursement programs. Is your company one of them?

  5. You don’t like your company’s management or culture. We all have conflicts with our bosses once in awhile, but if you’re continually dissatisfied with the way the company is run, it may be time to find yourself another company.

  6. You can’t stop complaining. Most of us complain about our jobs, but happy employees can identity the things they like about their jobs, too. If the bad has started to outweigh the good, you’re probably ready to move on.

  7. You can’t remember the last time you had fun at work. Hey, work is work. It’s not a party. But it shouldn’t be torture, either. If you’re not having any fun at all, ever, then you are probably in the wrong job. Look for the right one at www.CopierCareers.com.

Ricoh to Cut 10,000 Jobs Over 3 Years. Ricoh Co. said Thursday it plans to cut about 10,000 jobs through March 2014, as the Japanese maker of digital cameras and office equipment aims to slim down and refocus operations to compete globally. Ricoh, which had just under 110,000 employees world-wide in March, said that while its overall work force would shrink by nearly 10%, it plans to shift personnel within the group to areas with more growth potential, such as services for corporate clients.

Ricoh Achieves Color Electronic Paper Display With Enhanced Brightness and Reproducibility. Using its original display method, Ricoh has achieved a display of color still images with about 2.5 times brighter and 4 times wider color reproduction range compared with presently commercialized electronic paper technologies. Electronic paper, having no luminous source, differs from a conventional display unit in that it requires no electric power except for rewriting characters and images. The color electronic paper market is expected to grow significantly with future technology development, greatly expanding possible applications.

Xerox and EFI Expand Mobile Print Options for On-the-Go Workers. Office workers on the go can now print from virtually any mobile device to Xerox Corporation’s MFPs with EFI’s new cloud-based solution, PrintMe. With EFI PrintMe, workers simply upload or email their documents to www.PrintMe.com. Jobs are sent via the cloud to any Extensible Interface Platform-enabled MFP. A document ID code is then emailed to the user to securely release the document for printing on demand. “EFI has provided mobile print solutions for almost a decade,” said Toby Weiss, senior vice president of EFI. “We’re advancing our leadership position with a new, simple way for Xerox customers to print anywhere without hassle.”

HP Introduces Web-Connected Large Format ePrinters for Design Professionals. HP has expanded its portfolio of web-connected HP Designjet ePrinters that make large format printing easy and offer instant file access to professionals in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries. The new HP Designjet T1300 ePrinter primarily serves large workgroups, while the HP Designjet T790 ePrinter is tailored for small, mobile technical design teams. Both devices simplify the large format printing and content sharing processes, so design professionals can focus on building and executing their ideas.

Canon’s Fujio Mitarai Makes Annual Barron’s List of World’s 30 Best CEOs. Mitarai has been recognized for his five-year growth plan to boost Canon’s revenue outside of Japan and invest in new business, and, more recently, for taking control of the company’s disaster recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Barron’s compiled its annual roster of the top corporate leaders in 2011 by looking in particular at how individuals have tailored plans to approach Asia and other developing markets. The selection of finalists was based on information collected from interviews with analysts, investors, and executives.
