Skills deficit may be cause of continued high unemployment

According to a recent article by Timothy Homan for Bloomberg, unemployment remains high in the United States despite recent signs that the overall job market is improving. The reason, Homan suggests, is that employers are unable to find workers with the right qualifications to fill job openings.

Homan writes: "The housing bust and ensuing financial crisis put people out of work whose skills may not correspond with those needed by the healthcare providers and engineering firms where jobs go wanting."

A survey conducted in May by Milwaukee-based Manpower, Inc. found that 52 percent of companies polled said they were having trouble finding qualified help, a 38-point jump since 2010, when only 14 percent of companies polled said they had difficulty finding qualified workers.

"Employers…struggle to find talent with mission-critical skills," said Manpower executive Jonas Prising in a December statement. "The lack of demand for products and services and the ongoing skills mismatch profoundly impact hiring decisions."

Although the economy has been slowly mending over the past several months, economists are concerned that the shortage of skilled applicants may prevent the unemployment rate from improving and could potentially slow consumer spending.


 

THE TOP 5... Ways to motivate your employees without money

Tips from the trenches to keep your copier career on track  

There’s no question that the best way to attract and retain top copier-industry talent is to show them the money. But if pay raises and big bonuses are simply not feasible this year, there are a few other things managers can do to keep their employees happy and motivated. The top 5:

  1. Don’t criticize, ever. It’s a simple fact that’s way too easy to forget: nobody likes to be told they’re wrong. So how do you improve future performance without pointing out weaknesses or criticizing past mistakes? Try an indirect, conversational approach. Ask your employees whether they solved the problem in the best possible way and what they would do differently if they had a second chance. This way, you’re talking about solutions instead of blaming individuals.

  2. Give praise as often as possible. When you notice employees doing something right, say something. Let them know you appreciate their hard work, their technical skills, their dedication to customer service, their creative approach to problem solving, their team spirit, their time management techniques, or whatever else happens to catch your attention. The more specific, the better: “I’m impressed with the diplomatic way you handled that customer’s problem today” is much more meaningful than "Keep up the good work."

  3. Give small rewards. Just because you can’t afford big rewards doesn’t mean you have to give up small rewards. Little things like event tickets, movie passes, and gift cards can show your employees you appreciate them without breaking the bank. Bonus points for passing these rewards out at unexpected intervals. Sometimes a small gift that surprises you is worth more than a larger reward you’re expecting.

  4. Throw company parties. You don’t have to wait for the holidays to hold a company get-together, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money, either. Birthday parties, picnics, and happy hours are inexpensive, easy ways to show your employees a good time while building friendships and team solidarity.

  5. Harness the power of competition. Without going overboard or becoming too numbers-obsessed, organizing a little friendly competition between fellow employees can help keep work fun. People are wired to enjoy games, and competition can be a great way to keep people in any department motivated, even when the only prize is peer recognition.

HP Appoints New Leader of Enterprise Services, U.S. Public Sector. HP has appointed Marilyn Crouther senior vice president and general manager of HP Enterprise Services, U.S. Public Sector region. Crouther is responsible for driving growth in the government IT marketplace. She will manage the delivery of secure, mission-critical technology infrastructure, applications, and business processes to address government priorities, challenges, and policy requirements. "Marilyn is a results-driven executive who will accelerate our efforts in delivering best-in-class services to government clients while maintaining strong client relationships," said John Visentin, executive vice president and general manager, HP Enterprise Services. "Marilyn’s significant experience in federal contracting…makes her ideally placed to achieve these efforts."

Global Imaging Systems Acquires Wisconsin-based Office Products Distributor MBM. Global Imaging Systems, a Xerox Company, has acquired Merizon Group Incorporated, which operates MBM in Appleton, Wisconsin. The acquisition furthers Global Imaging’s strategy of creating a nationwide network of locally-based companies focused on improving document workflow and office efficiency. Earlier this year, Global acquired companies in Iowa, New York, Illinois, Virginia, and Florida. "Since 1956, MBM has been the leading document technology and imaging products company in northeastern Wisconsin," said Fritz Merizon, president of MBM. "This move is all about helping our customers in a way that will benefit them through enhanced access to industry - leading technology backed by a national support network." Merizon will remain president of MBM.

CompTIA Cloud Essentials Targets Growing Need for Cloud Computing Skills. With the use of cloud computing expanding and the demand for information technology workers with cloud skills growing, CompTIA, the nonprofit trade association for the IT industry, has introduced a new specialty certification focused on cloud computing knowledge. CompTIA Cloud Essentials covers a range of cloud computing principles and concepts. The specialty certification was developed in cooperation with ITpreneurs, a provider of competence development solutions for IT best practices. "As use of the cloud expands, the demand for IT workers with cloud computing knowledge grows as well," said Terry Erdle, executive vice president, skills certification, CompTIA. "CompTIA Cloud Essentials is designed to bolster the cloud computing credentials of the IT workforce."

Oce Business Services Introduces Océ PrintExpress Online Print and Distribution Service. Oce Business Services has introduced its Océ PrintExpress online print and distribution service. The new offering has already been deployed at leading healthcare and financial services companies, which require high quality professional print and finishing service along with next-day or on-demand delivery. Océ PrintExpress, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and requires no software besides a web browser, is available in two offerings. The On Demand Print offering enables companies with a deadline to submit print jobs at late as 10pm for next-day delivery. The Publishing Market Place offering enables companies to create an online storefront through which their customers or employees can order print materials when needed. Publishing Market Place can be implemented as a cost or profit center, billing either the company’s or the customer’s account.
